A - Host Address

Return to FAQ/Help System menu

The A-record is the most basic and the most important DNS record type.

They are used to translate human friendly domain names such as "www.domain.com" into IP-addresses such as 1.2.3.4 (machine friendly numbers).

A-records are the DNS server equivalent of the hosts file - a simple domain name to IP-address mapping.

You can use the A-record in the normal form or the raw form on our servers. The format in which to enter the data is as follows:

Standard form:
www A 1.2.3.4
@    A 1.2.3.4

Raw form:
www 86400 A 1.2.3.4
@    86400 A 1.2.3.4

Where 'www' is a subdomain and '@' is the root zone name. 86400 is the TTL in seconds.
